OWEN.
missed the last train home,
birds pass by to tell me that i'm not alone.
i can handle a lot, but one thing i'm missing,
is in your eyes.

Cathleen was in the midst of scribbling random notes on her textbook when the last bell rang. She didn't mean to get bored of the content before the class began, but as the teacher went on and on, she eventually did. It was inevitable. It wasn't because she hated classes or school boring, because she did kind of like school. Oddly enough, she did figure it was beneficial even if almost everything would never apply in your future. But, there had to be a rather good reason why school was compulsory right?

There had to be a reason why these lessons had to be attended. Yet, breaking out of the delusion, it was always her own late-night study sessions that brought more help than these lessons. Heartbreaking truth was, the teachers gave no guidance. At least not to Cathleen.

Cathleen shut her book as she still glued onto her seat. There were many which were crowding the door, so she figured she might as well let everyone run off since they seemed so keen to. It was yet another end of a school day. She guessed that most probably had somewhere to jet off too, but Cathleen didn't make herself many plans. And so, she was not in any sort of rush.

Sometimes, Cathleen would head to the animal shelter after school. She'll bathe the dogs, make sure they get their food and stuff like that. Other times, she will help out with putting up flyers in awaring people that there's many who need help from the more fortunate. But today, well, she wasn't left with anything to do, which led her to decide to head to a random spot in the school campus after she walked out of the classroom.

Cathleen figured that she might as well find somewhere to chill. She wasn't planning to go home just yet. It was another place to spend quality time with herself anyway. She was a bit sick of being the only one in that big house, but that didn't got to her much. Either that, or well frankly, she wasn't fond of allowing herself to let it get to her. Preferred to ignore the unlikable than hate, you know? Upon walking in the opposite direction of most, Cathleen found herself crossing the grass patch and into the courtyard.

She decided to sit under a shady tree. Leaning herself on the trunk, Cathleen inserted her earphones into her ears as she let Rogue Wave's "Eyes" soothingly played. Cathleen inhaled the fresh air that surrounded her and shut her eyes for that stiff moment with the textbook from the previous class she had. She made a mental note to revise up a chapter. So she says.

On a typical day, Owen made it his mission to avoid attending his last period class. Rather, he would sit on the freshly mowed turf of the courtyard, and chain smoke with one of his classmates. However, his teacher had warned him that if he didn’t start attending his AP French classes, he would likely fail, and so that day he had reluctantly and begrudgingly went to his class. And despite entertaining himself by checking out the bodacious girl who sat to his right, the time still seemed to inch by slowly for Owen.
When the last bell finally did ring, Owen had leapt from his chair as if it were made from burning coals, and made his way to the courtyard with the intent of lighting up a cigarette and talking with a few of his school friends, as he did everyday.
It wasn’t until he had sauntered over to the weeping willow tree where he and his friends usually hung around that Owen noticed he was alone, with the exception of a few lowerclassmen and a couple of weird kids from his own grade.
Sighing with discontent, Owen shrugged off his messenger bag and lowered himself to the ground. It was then that he spotted a familiar face, sitting about two trees away. With a smirk, Owen raised a palm in greeting to Cathleen, a junior he had met on a previous occasion.

but one thing i'm missing,

While Cathleen found herself in the midst of the airwaves, she watched the students passing by. She couldn't help but amuse herself when she noticed everyone walking in their own social groups. It was like, an unwritten rule. If you were carrying your juicy couture handbag and big sunnies with heels, you hang out with others who share similiar handbags and sunnies. Now, Cathleen of course understands that people with similiar interest, well group together. Its only natural. Yet, that doesn't mean that you're going to be chopped dead if you talk to anyone else.

Cathleen rested her head on the trunk as she started to ponder. Where did she stand? Truthfully, Cathleen never give a darn about these things, even if some say that she should. But Cathleen didn't care about a lot of things that others cared about. She didn't always like the things people liked, and sometimes hated the things that people loved. She wasn an oddball. If she wasn't born in this place, she probably didn't belong, but that wasn't a wrong thing. Maybe she should just be given her own clique, ha.

Cathleen started to gaze around as she finally watched the last few groups of people leaving. Her gaze suddenly stopped when she met a familiar face, with his palm raised. Cathleen found herself smiling back to Owen, as she mouthed 'Hey'. She didn't know him very well, but maybe some company would do her good. She leaped up from her position as she carried her books and ipod in her hand before heading to the tree Owen was sitting under. "Hi..mind if I crash?" Cathleen asked, realising that it didn't occur to her that he might not actually be keen on having any company. Whoops.

As Cathleen approached him, Owen resisted the urge to scrutinize her anatomy as he routinely did to all of the girls he interacted with. Call it whatever pleases you, but Owen preferred to refer to it as the trademark characteristic of a lady-killer. Despite this, he had managed to direct his eyes to her face for the entirety of her advance towards him--which was a first.

“Of course I don’t,” Owen responded, and adjusted his frame so that there would be enough room for her to join.

Momentarily, Owen distracted himself from Cathleen by shifting the contents of his schoolbag about as to gain access to the near-empty pack of Davidoff cigarettes. Making a mental note to remember to purchase a new package next time he was given the opportunity to, Owen clenched the unlit cancer stick between his front teeth and wrapped his lips loosely around the end. He dug through his shoulder bag for a lighter, and brought it to the tip of the cigarette once he found it. Once the end had caught fire, enabling Owen to take the toxins into his body, he remembered his manners.

“Did you want one?” he asked, holding out the box to Cathleen.

well i'm pushing myself,
to finish this part.

"Thanks," Cathleen smiled at Owen as she sat herself down on the grass. It was strange how she bumped into him rather frequently these days, compared to a whole bunch of strangers. Cathleen and Owen practically had no school-related thing in common. They might be different too, but if Owen doesn't mind Cathleen, then Cathleen could definitely say the same for him too.

Cathleen pulled her legs in, which left little distance between her legs and body, with the books and music player in between. She took one of her earphones out of one of the ear, so she could still hear hints of Rogue Wave playing, but she could also hear Owen as well. "No thanks," Cathleen replied. She knew that didn't make her sound very well-off, but she just wasn't much of a smoker unless she really needed to. Either when she was extremely frustrated, or when she was completely stressed out. And, most of those do lead into similiar points. Okay fine, she was pretty prude-ish. Sue her.

"We seem to have the same chill-out places," Cathleen chuckled before asking, "So what brings you here?" It was not exactly the best question, but she was willing to say anything to lead any sort of awkwardness out of the atmosphere. Though at that moment, it seemed impossible to be so wishful. But certainly Owen had somewhere to run off to, like most others, right?

Owen shrugged his shoulders at her refusal of a cigarette, and returned the package to it’s home in his bag. He figured her rejection of his oh-so-generous offer to be her own loss, as in his opinion, Davidoffs were an invention of pure genius. He ceased the action of bringing the cigarette to his lips briefly, rather, clasped the fag between his index finger and thumb. Clearing his throat, Owen rubbed his free palm over his cheekbones and brow before speaking,

“So it seems,” he paused in order to long drag off the tobacco-stick, “I’m not due anywhere until at least midnight, so really, I’m just killing time.”

Owen had been hard-heartedly invited to a birthday celebration at one of the local nightclubs, in honor of a former classmate who had been expelled earlier in the year for being caught with narcotics on the school grounds. Owen had barely even spoken to the guy, but because of his reputation, he had been asked to join the party. One would have to be a complete imbecile not to extend an invitation to Owen, as it was well known that wherever he went, a night of fun was sure to follow.

“And yourself?” he inquired, putting out the remainders of his cigarette with his heel, as it had grown too difficult to hold.

you can't stop kicking the heart out,
and you're a practical mess.

There was a moment of silence between the two, as Cathleen swapped from "Eyes" to "Kicking the Heart Out" in her Rogue Wave playlist. It was honestly the perfect music to chill with, for the timebeing. She let the music began to play through her ears while Owen in short, chain-smoked. It did seem kind of tempting, you know? But, Cathleen could do without it. She figured, especially since all she has came to know was being in control. Of herself, of what she does and all.

"I see," Cathleen replied, wishing she was given the abilty to say something else somehow or rather. She definitely couldn't be a conversationalist to save her life. "About the same, except I'm due at about five or six," Cathleen said. The background of her reply was miles away from Owen's, besides the fact that it was for a person they barely spoke to. Ever since her mom's left, she's been stuck with the job of putting her dad and the house chores under her care, which also meant she was in charge of the meals.

That was when Cathleen recalled what happened this morning when she was greeted with the cold dinner that she prepared for her father the night before. She proceded to throw the food into the trash, which wasn't something Cathleen was very fond of doing. She didn't like wasting food. "Or actually, maybe not," She said her thoughts aloud. It wasn't intentional, but it wasn't something she could take back either.

Owen raised his left eyebrow at her haphazard remark, and snickered lightly. It was clear that Cathleen had slipped up and spoken her thoughts aloud, yet the statement had challenged her previous comment so perfectly that it had seemed almost staged.

“Can‘t make up your mind?” he laughed, good-naturedly mocking her mistake.

Stifling a yawn, Owen rubbed his eyes with closed fists and willed them to stay open without him having to strain. As a result of having too many margaritas the previous night, Owen had been feeling drained throughout the day, and was now struggling to stay alert. Aware that it would be extremely impolite for him to succumb to slumber while having a conversation with his newfound friend, Owen had forced himself to rely on frequent yawns and crude face massages to stay awake.

“So do you listen to anything other than Rogue Wave?” he asked her, nodding at her music player.

(ooc; I love rogue wave, xDD. annnnd, sorry this is crap.)

what makes the wild wind whistle,
what makes the birdies sing?

"Shut up," Cathleen playfully hit his arm as she heard his remark, though you could sense zero annoyance, anger or frustration in her tone. To state the obvious, she slipped up, but she might as well make the best of it right? "Maybe," Cathleen replied to his mock, plastering a smile on her face. She wasn't planning on mentioning anything about it anymore. She also knew that there were many in the school that had family lives far worse than hers. She only belonged to a mother that ran away and a father that doesn't care. It was not as bad now, was it ?

In the midst of her silent thoughts, Cathleen heard Owen stiffle a yawn. She chuckled before adding,"You can sleep, you know. I wouldn't like to deprive you off your sleep or anything," Cathleen said as she pointed to her book and music player. Those could keep her company. It was her who invited herself to cause Owen some disturbance anyway. In her mind, she couldn't help but find the yawns and smoking slightly amusing. She didn't usually hang out with people like him, not that she was labeling him or anything, but it was simply the truth.

In fact, to think of it, Cathleen rarely hung out with anyone specifically. She floated more often than actually having this specific group of friends. She liked people, but that didn't mean she stuck with them. Because she liked being there for people, but that didn't mean she wanted them to be there for her. And anyway, she was certain that people weren't very keen on having her as company either. She for one, had a very different taste in music. She couldn't bear most sounds that came from mainstream radio. "Sure do," Cathleen nodded to herself as her Rogue Wave playlist disappeared from the screen and she started scrolling about her other artistes. "Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, Earlimart.." She said aloud as she looked in her little ipod screen. She couldn't tell whether he was prepared to mock or exclaim that he knew or love those bands too. Anyway, friends let friends make a fool of themselves, right ?

[ooc; awesome! i wasn't sure whether you actually like them or you were just stuck following. haha, no yours is great! pfft unlike mine, i should be the one apologizing.]

If Owen‘s prior commitment hadn‘t involved liquor, he would have likely been in the same boat as her. To be honest, he wasn’t exactly looking forward to a night spent with people who had only asked him along to benefit themselves. He would have much rather skipped the entire shindig and instead hung around with Cath, doing whatever she had to do at five o’clock. Although in all likelihood, she had had a dinner date and was just being polite by pretending she didn’t want to ditch his ass as soon as possible to primp for the night ahead.

“I’m surprised you didn’t break something in your hand when you hit this sick puppy,” Owen joked, gesturing at his shaped bicep with a chuckle.

Owen really was not one of those gym rats who worked out for four hours each day. Truthfully, he despised going to work out, as his idea of fun was not being surrounded by sweating men who could easily bench-press more than what Owen weighed. However, drinking like there was no tomorrow each night had it‘s price, and that was empty calories, which, if not exercised off would result in instant weight gain. And so, Owen went to the gym every morning, which had rewarded him with a toned physique.

“Naw, I’m okay. It would be pretty awkward for you to have to sit around while I drooled out the Nile River,” he replied with a laugh.

He listened keenly as she named off the other artists she listened to, faintly smiling when she mentioned one of his favorite bands, Death Cab For Cutie. He enjoyed listening to their tunes when he was relaxing on his balcony or sunbathing by the poolside.

“I love Death Cab,” he interrupted with a grin, glad to have found someone who shared his taste in music.

(ooc; are you kidding? yours are wonderful!)

but oh, you're twenty five for an hour,
and i'm related to it.

"Don't flatter yourself," Cathleen chuckled towards both his gesture and his comment. That's why we eat and actually have some meat in ourselves, no? Cathleen didn't mean to have thoughts which offended anyone, but it was her own way of consoling herself. She did feel a bit self-conscious sometimes, because somehow or rather, the more less-than-size-zero you were, the more gorgeous you are. And, Cathleen didn't like caring about the outer appearance, but sometimes the fact that people cared about it so much influenced her way of thoughts. "I've hit more solid ones," Cathleen joked, as she held her fist up.

"It won't! If I don't, it would just be selfish of me anyway," And what was worse? Of course, Cathleen would love to have him to talk to and be with, preferably awake, but if he had something better to do, Cathleen shouldn't stop him, should she? Technically, anything was better to talking to Cathleen in her low self-esteem opinion, but she did mean it otherwise. Afterall, he probably had a party to go to later at night. Cathleen had, well herself.

She couldn't put a word to describe Owen really. He acted like one of those shallow people at times, and well other times he was that sensitive guy. And now, he had good taste in music too? Owen never stopped surprising Cathleen, did he? "Really?" She yelped, frankly expressing her genuine surprise. Though they were a good band, so what was there to be surprise about? But, she really thought of him as more of a Justin Timberlake guy. "I love them. I can't wait for their show next week," Cathleen added, which wasn't even close to everything she had to say about the band, but she decided to stop right there for now. "So what other bands do you like ?" Cathleen started to grow curious of what other music that Owen listened to.

[ooc; i doubt so, more like you're describing yours! pahaa, i think we should drop the topic. anyway, if my posts ever suck too badly, you can always ask me to re-type them. ;]]

Owen snickered, and shrugged his shoulders. Compliments were handed to him on a frequent basis, and after a while of hearing ‘your hair looks nice,’ or ‘love the shirt, Owen’ it was no surprise that he had gotten a tad sick of them. It may very well have been a different case if the admiring comments had been sincere, but Owen found that the majority of the praises were disingenuous. And so, when Cath had teased him, he found himself respecting her a smidgeon more. She was real around him, and didn’t find the need to butter him up, which he appreciated.

“Yeah, it’s really selfish of someone to want the person who they’re talking with to actually be awake,” Owen retorted, dryly.

That was one thing about Cath that he didn’t really get. He found that she tried almost too hard to be nice, and would put others before herself in all situations. Like, for instance, if he had said that he’d forgotten his lunch, she would most likely give him hers. In a society like LA, being kind-hearted was, at some times, a person’s downfall.

“You know, the usual. The Shins, The Postal Service, Page France, Phoenix.” Owen paused and rubbed the bridge of his nose, “But I don’t hate the stuff they play in the clubs either.”

In fact, Owen enjoyed listening to a variety of different artists. From Madonna to Rufus Wainwright, and Nirvana to Frank Sinatra. Not only did he listen to these artists, but he sang along to some of their greatest hits in his shower…in all of his tone-deaf glory.
